New Phenolic Compounds Found In Koroneiki Olive Oil

New phenolic compounds oleokoronol, oleomissional and ligstrodial have been found specifically in Koroneiki and Mission extra virgin olive oils: This is exciting news given that phenolic compounds present in olive oil act as strong antioxidants and free radical scavengers. It is currently known that olive oil is a source of at least 30 phenolic compounds, the major ones being oleuropein, hydroxytyrosol and tyrosol, which are postulated to contribute to the lower incidence of coronary heart disease, as well as prostate and colon cancers in the Mediterranean diet. It will be interesting to see in future studies the role of these new phenolic compounds in the prevention of such diseases.
