Extra Virgin Olive Oil Is Better For Your Health Than Coconut Oil

I recently came across an article in the Boston Globe entitled “Should you replace olive oil with coconut oil?”, found here, This is one of the most common questions I get asked by individuals passing my booth at the Farmer’s Market. In fact, this particular article shares my sentiments exactly, in that when it comes to your heart health ‘‘it would be dangerous, and rather silly, to replace your extra virgin olive oil with coconut oil.’’ Coconut oil contains 92% saturated fat and raises LDL (bad) cholesterol significantly more than extra virgin olive oil and other unsaturated plant oils. Plus, extra virgin olive oil contains monounsaturated fats like oleic acid and polyphenol antioxidants that are protective against heart disease, so there’s good reason to make it your go-to source of fat.
